George was born around September 1889 in Shenstone, Staffordshire, the son of George and Emily Lee. By 1891 the family were living in Mackworth. George had an elder sister, Sarah, who had been born around 1887. His father’s occupation was given as an Agricultural Labourer and he was 56 years old when his son was born.
The family stayed in Mackworth for at least the next few years as the 1901 census gives the Lee family as, George, 68 years, Emily, 45 years, Sarah Ann, 13 years, George Jr., 11 years, William, 7 years and Frances May, 9 years. On the census form George Jr. is called Walter no doubt to avoid confusion with his father.
No obvious record is to be found on the 1911 census. However, on George’s gravestone in France is engraved, “The son of George and Emily Lee of 36 Bridge Street, Derby, late of Markeaton.
George was killed in action in France on the 25th June 1915. He was a rifleman, service number S/6824, in the 1st Battalion of the Rifle Brigade. He is buried in the Bertrancourt Military Cemetery.
Bertrancourt Village is in the Department of the Somme and contains the bodies of 416 Commonwealth burials of the First World War.
